Love is one of the most overuse words of all times. We “Love” nice weather, or a delicious meal or the smell of freshly mowed grass. But God’s love doesn’t express itself in terms of feelings or emotions. Rather, God’s love is expressed in actions and sacrifice. His love was the ultimate sacrifice to declare us “forgiven“ and claim us for Heaven.

What benefits does Baptism give? It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. Which are these words and promises of God? Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. In today’s message we will hear how Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan River sets the stage for Him accomplishing His mission to pay for our sins.

Life is filled with peaks and valleys. Peaks are times to celebrate and to praise God - such as your wedding day, or the birth of your child. But valleys are life’s challenges - such as a diagnosis of cancer or the death of a loved one. These are times that can shake you faith. No matter what life brings us, we need to focus on praising God for His amazing grace and His amazing power.

You probably remember an old soap commercial that talked about how hard it is to get things clean - really clean. You try scrubbing and soaking and you still end up with that ring-around-the-collar. It really seems so hopeless. Well, that’s a picture of the uncleanness of our sin, but the Good News is that when it comes to our sins, Jesus is always willing to make us be cleansed.

An elderly woman walked into a large department store and approached a salesperson. She explained that she wanted to return an automobile tire she felt was unsuitable for her car. The woman explained that she had the tire with her but had lost the receipt. The salesperson discovered that she had been a longtime customer of his store, and said, “That’s not a problem. Would store credit be OK?” What’s extraordinary is the the store didn’t sell automotive equipment - not even tires. This is a modern day prophet story about people who received good things they didn’t deserve.
